The terms "hard skills" and "soft skills" have become common phrases in leadership development, professional development, and personal development circles. However, many people are unaware of the historical context behind these terms. In the book, Grant reveals that the distinction was initially made in the army to differentiate between skills related to "hard things" (metal) and "soft things" (people).
Unfortunately, this classification has carried over and evolved to perpetuate gender biases and societal assumptions. Metal, being associated with toughness and strength, was considered difficult and manly, while "soft" skills were deemed delicate, feminine, and unnecessary.
